In this sophisticated world, one often finds oneself in a struggle with power, fame, money, attention and many other unnecessary entities of life. I seek to find a simple life, uncomplicated yet meaningful. A lot more important elements of life are waiting to be discovered. Live your life to the fullest.

Around the World

Had a hectic 4 days. I have a free day tomorrow fortunately, so I guess I could stay at home and do some work. Been returning home quite late lately due to my evening classes.

I almost forgot how nice it is to slack at home.

I took an astronomy module this semester. It is very interesting but the projects are really tedious. I have to take pictures of the sun and moon every now and then for the next three months.

Seriously I am beginning to appreciate how the sun and stars move across the sky and how certain phenomenal occurs.

Something the lecturer said today caught my ears: If you want to travel around the world, go to the north pole and walk a small round.

That's cheating, but it is true to a certain extent.

In life, I am sure you need to cheat a little to get by. Don't you agree?

Getting out of the Slump

What motivates you in life?

It is scary when you have no motivation and no goals in life.

It is like you are lost in the middle of the sea, with no way of communicating with the outside world.

Someone said this: Focus on not what you have lost, but what you have and what you can achieve.

Not easy, but you should really try.

Life is a journey. There are bound to be ups and downs.

Would you rather get stuck in the slump? Or push yourself ahead and brace on what awaits you?

You decide.

Two Choices

I thought this tie in perfectly with my last post. Got it from facebook. A very touching email.

Two Choices

What would you do?....you make the choice. Don't look for a punch line, there isn't one. Read it anyway. My question is: Would you have made the same choice?

At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning-disabled children, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question: 'When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?'

The audience was stilled by the query.

The father continued. 'I believe, that when a child like Shay, physically and mentally handicapped comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.'

Then he told the following story:

Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, 'Do you think they'll let me play?' Shay's father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, 'We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.'

Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. His Father watched with a small tear in his eye and warmth in his heart. The boys saw the father's joy at his son being accepted. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.

At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.

However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.

The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.

Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, 'Shay, run to first! Run to first!' Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.

Everyone yelled, 'Run to second, run to second!' Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball ... the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home.

All were screaming, 'Shay, Shay, Shay, all the way Shay'

Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, 'Run to third! Shay, run to third!'

As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, 'Shay, run home! Run home!' Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team.

'That day', said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, 'the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world'.

Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making his father so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

AND NOW A LITTLE FOOTNOTE TO THIS STORY: We all send thousands of jokes through the e-mail without a second thought, but when it comes to sending messages about life choices, people hesitate. The crude, vulgar, and often obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion about decency is too often suppressed in our schools and workplaces.

If you're thinking about forwarding this message, chances are that you're probably sorting out the people in your address book who aren't the 'appropriate' ones to receive this type of message. Well, the person who sent you this believes that we all can make a difference. We all have thousands of opportunities every single day to help realize the 'natural order of things.' So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice: Do we pass along a little spark of love and humanity or do we pass up those opportunities and leave the world a little bit colder in the process?

A wise man once said every society is judged by how it treats it's least fortunate amongst them

You now have two choices:
1. Delete
2. Forward
May your day, be a Shay Day

Hope it make your day!

Choices

Td asked me to blog about choices that day when we met up.

What really prompted me to write about this is the fact that I have a few projects this semester. And in doing projects, you need to form group. The dilemma arises when there are more than one party who asked you to join their group. Not that I am super popular (I wish though), but because there are many small groups around and we need to team up to form the required number. I feel bad when I have to turn down a few of them. Sorry.

Another more important choice I need to make is which department I want to work in in the future.

Seriously, I am interested in some of the module departments as I think I will learn the most from there. For business operations, only business and marketing interest me. However, I feel that the work is quite general, though the good thing is that I will have a flexible working hours and no need to go into the clean room. Contemplating. Choices again.

I think I will think it over the weekend.

Italy

I Trust And Love You - Italy

Was reading about some European countries recently to prepare myself for the graduation trip. Italy is fascinating. I have more or less decided to go there and maybe one more country. This is a little different from the original plan of visiting a lot of countries in Europe. However, this would save us a bit of money I suppose and enable us to enjoy the cities more throughly without the hassle of having to travel too much.

According to the lonely planet, these are the top 5 must for tourist:

1. Italian food and wine
2. Florence
3. Rome
4. Venice
5. Siena

Seriously, I am a bit surprised to see Florence on the second spot. After reading it, I must say all these cities are indeed worth a visit.

I love Florence.

Tong Dee do not quote me for saying that. Haha.

Should be going in June and I think there is only me and td. Maybe Julius. If you want you are free to join us.

A Day At SSMC

Went for a mingling session at SSMC today.

Started off the day at a wrong note. Waited for the bus for 30 minutes. In the end, I had to take a cab in order not to be too late. It was a whopping $21!

The session was quite a good one. Got quite some valuable information, but I would need to indicate my preference for my future working department soon. Should I go for the business operations or technical operation?

I am quite impressed by the fab though. It is big. Really excited to start working. Hmm, just a little information here, I would be starting work no later than 1 July. That means I only have less than two months of holidays as a student.

Please go see ch's blog. He just won a date with some model. Good job bro!

Running Low on Confidence

Went swimming with XXX lately and he told me he has lost some confidence in himself. I totally agree with him when I see him. But I am wondering to myself if I am in the same plight as him now. Definitely I am running low on confidence.

It is not easy to admit it, but I am going hard on myself to instill this fact right into the very core of my heart. Because I want to get out of this as quick as I can. It is an uphill task but I am not going to give up.

When I was admitted to the hospital, I asked myself a lot of questions. Why is this happening? Why me?

I thought maybe I wasn't a good enough person and God has decided to punish me.

I am not sure if I have written about this already, but anyway, in the first few days of my admittance to the hospital, I was quite upset about everything (come on who won't?). Why am I there, why is this happening blah blah. I actually blamed God for whatever it is happening to me.

Later, I began to see things as they were. Sometimes things are just meant to be. I longer blame anyone for what happened.

When I got better, I thanked God or who ever out there who is watching me. I am a lucky person after all, to survive this ordeal.

This might be the last time I am going to talk about such morbid stuffs. I tell myself this is so unlike me. But I guess the mood I have now suits writing about such stuffs. Even my blog skin is so emo as many have said. I am going to change one for the upcoming CNY. It will be a happier one I promise.

So while some of us might be a little low in spirits recently, actually I know quite some of my friends are, please take it with a pinch of salt as in life there will always be ups and downs.

What really differentiate a happy and successful person from one who is not, is not just always being able to bathe in the bliss of happiness, but the ability to climb out of slumps whenever you fall in.

Smart?

I saw this TV program today. It is on Channel 5, and I think it is call: "Do you think you are smarter than a 5th grader?" Something like that.

Anyway, it is something like Who wants to be a Millionaire and Identity. You got to climb up the ladder to reach 1 million. You get helps like peek, copy from children from 4th grades.

Anyway, one of the questions was: In square inches, what is half of the area of a square with side 12 inches?

Simple right? And that guy gave up to settle for the money. Later, he answered for fun and got it wrong. Lucky him. But he proposed to his gf at the end of the show. Big winner.

I guess in life, you give up something, you gain something else.
